Willy Derby was a Dutch singer, very popular in the 20's, 30's and 40's. He toured Indonesia when it was still a Dutch colony, very popular there in those days.... In the Second World War he was thrown in jail twice by the nazi's who were not happy with some of his songs. He died from a heart attack in 1944....
It must have been 1994, maybe 1995, and I was working in cafe The Rhythm in my city of birth, Rotterdam. I was cleaning tables, bouncing and selling hash and weed on the side.... In comes this very tall, very freaky American dude, nice fellow and he bought a shit load of hash and weed. Only after he left did I find out that he was in fact Helios Creed, the old guitar player from Chrome. I wish I'd known when he was in the cafe, I would've given him a big block of hash for free, back then I was already a long time fan of Chrome!!!!
Together with Damon Edge, Helios Creed was playing in Chrome, an incredible band, light years ahead of their time and I used to have many albums from them. I only have two albums left now, this album Red Exposure and their Half Machine Lip Moves album....
Helios is still very active, performing, recording and remastering lots of old unreleased Chrome material..... Damon Edge sadly passed away years ago....
Here's their official website:

I think it's safe to say that Doe Maar is one of the all time biggest Dutch bands, wildly popular in the 80's they have been doing lots of reunion concerts in the last few years at big venues, always sold out. Their music is an infectious mix of pop and reggae... Here's a record, total dub versions of some of their songs....

The Buddy Odor Stop was a Dutch band fronted by Hans Vanderburg, he was also in Dutch band Gruppo Sportivo.... I've got the two first Gruppo Sportivo albums and will post them soon....
And here's a bit of Gruppo Sportivo:

Here's a live album from James White & The Contortions and here he goes by his other name, James Change....

If you would ask me, "what's the best live show you've ever been to?", lots of concerts come to mind, Einsturzende Neubauten, The Birthday Party, Han Bennink with Kees Meurs, Public Enemy with EPMD,, Eric B & Rakim, Das Efx, Psychic TV or even Van Halen in 1979 in Amsterdam (the first concert I've been to, I was 14 and it was very, VERY impressive for me then)....
But really, I would have to answer, the best live show I've ever been to was in 1981, in The Doelen, Rotterdam and James White & The Contortions were playing.... The show started a few hours late, James got arrested buying heroine on The Kruiskade, a street right outside The Doelen. It was the very first show where I danced like crazy, from the beginning to the end. No small feat with the huge second hand army boots I was wearing (the punk era was still in full swing for me, I was living in a squad-house with some fellow freaks, crazy, CRAZY times)....
Here's Buy Contortions, one of my favorite James White albums....
Here's the great, very rare first album from the great Deutsch-Amerikanischen Freundschaft. Bought this one in '81....

Here's some nice experimental music, the songs from Ilhan Mimaroglu and John Cage flow into each other so I kept those two in one mp3....

I bought this incredible album some 27 years ago and I've been lovin' it ever since, just great, great music this. Unfortunately my copy is pretty beaten up, quiet a few cracks and clicks, hoping that one day I'll find a much better copy, but man, I love this album....

A while ago I put some music here from The Bommel Band, the band fronted by my good friend Arjan van Bommel.... In that band the guitar is played by another very good friend of mine, Marko van der Horst. Me, Bommel and Marko, we go way back, we used to work together in the legendary Rhythm Cafe in Rotterdam and me and Marko, we worked together in 1995, selling South-American clothing at pop festivals in Germany and Denmark, lots and lots of adventures, loads of fun....
Marko also played guitar for a while in this band, Come To C. from Rotterdam and here's their promo cd from a few years ago and it's pretty good actually.... (Come And See is one of my favorite war movies, but that's a whole other topic...)
