NINA & FREDERIK

I got this record from fellow collector and seller Jim Turner, I had no idea what it was and.... it's GREAT!!! Has to be heard to believe, calypso songs sung in a Caribian accent....

Nina & Frederik were a Danish - Dutch popular singing duo of the late 1950s and early 1960s. Their repertoire consisted of a blend of folk music, calypsos and standards. The duo consisted of Frederik, Baron van Pallandt and his wife at the time, Nina van Pallandt.

Nina & Frederik began singing together at the age of four, but since Frederik's father was the Dutch ambassador to Denmark, his family soon moved to Trinidad and Frederik eventually began to study at the university, where he formed a Calypso band. During this time he kept writing to Nina, and in 1957 they met again at her parents' home where one evening he played his guitar for her. To his surprise Nina began singing to it, and it was at that moment that they decided to sing together. Originally they sang only for their friends, and occasionally at house parties. This led to them being asked to perform at charity shows, and soon they were in demand professionally. On 1 July 1957, the duo made their professional show business debut in Copenhagen's top night club, Mon Coeur. Within a matter of months they became favourites throughout Europe, and also starred in the 1958 Danish singing-themed comedy The Richest Girl in the World. The couple married in September 1960 and, in 1961, had their own series on British Television, Nina and Frederik at Home.

Their earliest known single was "Jamaica Farewell"/"Come Back Liza", both calypso songs, issued in 1959 on Pye International 7N 25021, but showing a 1957 'recording first published' date.

Their debut album, Nina & Frederik, charted at number 9 on the UK Albums Chart in February 1960. Their second collection, also entitled Nina & Frederik but with a different selection of songs, peaked at number 11 in the UK chart in May 1961.

In 1963 they spent three weeks performing at the Savoy Hotel in London, and in December of the same year they gave a concert at the Royal Festival Hall, and made guest appearances on the panel of Juke Box Jury. Shunning the limelight, Frederik insisted the duo retire shortly thereafter, and the couple eventually divorced in 1976.

Frederik died in the Philippines from gunshot wounds on 15 May 1994.

RAWICZ AND LANDAUER - RHYTHMS IN THE SUN

Rawicz and Landauer were an immensely popular piano duo team that performed from 1932 to 1970. They were initially based in Vienna, Austria, but moved to the United Kingdom in the early part of their career. They were known for their arrangements of popular classics.

Marjan (or Maryan) Rawicz (1898 – 30 January 1970) was Polish. He studied in Poland, and in Vienna under Richard Robert, and also studied law at the University of Kraków, playing the piano at seaside resorts in his holidays to make ends meet.

Walter Landauer (1910 – 3 August 1983) was born in Vienna. He studied at the Vienna Music Academy and under Emil von Sauer.

Here's their 1959 album Rhythm In The Sun, all Latin songs....

JOHN MAYAL - THE BLUES ALONE

Talk about finding treasures in Indonesia :)

The Blues Alone is a 1967 Electric Blues album recorded by John Mayall. On this album he chose to record all the parts himself with the exception of percussion, which was provided by longtime collaborator Keef Hartley.

The cover art and the original LP sleeve design are by John Mayall. Sleeve notes, including track notes, were written by noted DJ John Peel. The following quote is of interest regarding the album concept.

I was featuring his album A Hard Road on the air and was amazed that, in addition to writing 8 of the 12 numbers on the record, playing 5- (sic) and 9-string guitar, organ, piano, harmonica and singing, he had written the sleeve notes and painted the portrait of the group on the front cover.
With this new LP he has carried all of this to its logical conclusion and has produced a record featuring no other musician than himself except for ... drummer Keef Hartley.
