H. DARIYAH - TAYUBAN GADO2 VOL. 1
So yeah, it's time for something I've been planning for a long, long time.... Re-recording and posting everything I have (and quiet a lot of stuff I haven't posted yet) from the great, late Mimi Hajah Dariyah, one of my all time favorite West-Javanese singers.... It's going to be a shit load of work but in the end it will be well worth it....
H. Dariyah was born in Cipunagara, Subang, August 1, 1953 and she started singing at a very, very young age. In 1969 she started the Cahaya Muda Group, together with her husband H.T. Makmun from Cirebon, and together they were incredibly prolific, putting out tarling , tayuban, tarling drama, tarling dangdut and jaipong cassettes... Many of the great stars coming out of Cirebon like Aam Kaminah, Itih S., Yoyo Suwaryo and many others learned their craft from her. She wasn't only singing, she was a composer as well and she wrote many of the tarling drama stories that she put out....
She passed away October 18, 2011, and was buried in Cipunagara, Pusakajaya, Subang, West Java, where she was born....
The end of her life was very, very sad and I'm really sad to say, so typical of so many of the great Indonesian artists of yesteryear....
A buddy of mine, the wild man himself, noise dj and performer Sebastien Lemonon, aka Dj Urine discovered her through this blog, fell in love with her music, went to Cirebon in search of anything he could find about her and somehow found himself sitting in the train next to an elderly man who turned out to be H. Dariyah's husband, H. T. Makmun and he told him her tragic story.... She was very sick for a long time and had to have some very costly operations that not only ate away all her savings, they had to go to the bank with her house as collateral and when she couldn't pay up anymore, she and her husband were thrown out of their house, all he managed to rescue from their house was their wedding picture, they weren't even allowed to take their personal belongings. She died very soon after that, such a sad, sad story.....
Anyway, one of the true greats, H. Dariyah, and I'm starting off with this fantastic tayuban cassette, Tayuban Gado2 Vol. 1....

Enjoy!
H. Dariyah is one of my absolute favorite singers too. I've listened incredibly much to the previous tayuban albums with her that you have posted so I'm very excited about these posts!! Also extremely sad to read the history of her last years. Thank you for sharing!
ReplyDeleteYou're most welcome Kristofer :) I have loads of tarling drama from her that have never been posted, will record those too :)
ReplyDeleteI'm also a big admirer of H. Dariyah, which I discovered only through your blog, Henk - thanks again! It's indeed a very sad story about the end of her life. If the health system would've been not so stupid, all people could benefit from it - but money makes the people so greedy and there are always those who suffer.
ReplyDeleteYour hard work and generosity is greatly appreciated!!
Thanks Lucky :) Yeah, that's unfortunately the world we live in :(
ReplyDeleteBeautiful work, and what a heartbreaking story... thank you for preserving her legacy.
ReplyDeleteWelcome!
