D. MILHAUD - LA CREATION DU MONDE / A. COPLAND - EL SALON MEXICO
Two compositions created after traveling.....
Composer Darius Milhaud went to The States in the early 20's, saws the leading dance orchestra at that time, Leo Reisman's orchestra, perform and he visited some night clubs in Harlem seeing more early jazz orchestras perform. On his return to Paris, in 1923 he wrote this piece, La Creation Du Monde, set in a jazz idiom..... It actually precedes George Gershwin's Rhapsody In Blue which is usually being thought of as the first composition to incorporate jazz....
Leonard Bernstein conducting the Columbia Chamber Orchestra and Benny Goodman playing the clarinet.....
Aaron Copland's piece El Salon Mexico, written in 1936 was composed after a visit to mexico, combining popular Mexican melodies with classical music.... Leonard Bernstein conducting the Columbia Symphony Orchestra....
