  1. The music in this offering was so wild I realized ketuk tilu has passed me by entirely. So now I am in the process of downloading every ketuk tilu album you've put on this site, and wow, there are a lot of them. I'm getting ready to do a serious binge listen to all of it. So, well, thank you, Henk. This is great.

  2. I love ketuk tilu, it's an acquired taste and there are many different styles, the old and modern styles are very, very different.... Internet has been terrible for days, still is, so haven't been able to upload anything...

    1. I acquired this taste in about five seconds, but it took me a couple of years to get jaipong, which might have made me so receptive to it.

    2. Well, ketuk tilu was one of the ingredients that Gugum Gumbira used to cook up jaipong.... Huge discussion btw, did he really develop jaipong? I say he didn't, you can hear it already before he came out with it, specially in the topeng banjet genre, Ali Saban, Suwanda, Robot and guys like that, but he stylized those genres and the dances that go with it are all him. He was definitely a genius....

  3. Basically, in the old days in Java ketuk tilu was music made by and for the lower classes, very different from the music played in the palaces. Small ketuk orchestras would move from village to village, from city to city and usually the dancing girls would be prostitutes too....
