Wah Wah (1947 or 1948-), real name Lau Kwai-hung[2], also known as Lau Suk-man, is a Hong Kong female singer; she made her debut in the 1960s, and became famous in the 1970s. She was known for her singing of Mandarin and Cantonese period tunes in the early days, and was also the ex-wife of the late lyricist James Wong, who emigrated to Canada in the 1980s and faded out of the music scene, and then returned to Hong Kong to live in Hong Kong in the millenniums. In recent years, she has occasionally been invited as a concert guest.

    Background
    Early life
Hua Wa was born in Beiping, the youngest of nine siblings in her family, with Xia Dan (Liu Guihua) and Liu Yun (Liu Guilan) as her older sisters, both of whom went on to become Mandarin-language period music singers, and whose father was the Kuomintang general Liu Jiewu[3][4].

In 1949, she moved with her family to British Hong Kong[4]. In addition, her nieces, Shi Ming and Wang Huili (stage name Wang Weini, Liu Yun's eldest daughter), are an artiste and the lead singer of the band ‘Windy Group’, respectively.

    History and Development
Hua Wa joined the music industry when she was in secondary school, after winning the ‘New Voice’ singing competition organised by Radio Television Hong Kong with the song ‘Three Years’, and joined the Mayor Records Company first, releasing albums such as ‘Moonlight and Flowers’ and ‘Zhou Xuan's Song’, which featured covers of Mandarin period tunes as well as behind-the-scenes singing for film actors[5][6] In the 1970s she became a singer with Entertainment Records and released her first Cantonese music album in 1974. In 1974, she released her first Cantonese music album ‘Yun Niang’, and sang a number of film and television songs[7]. She later formed the ‘Wah Wah Children's Choir’, which consisted of her three children and her sister Liu Yun's three daughters, and sang songs from children's programmes and animations, such as ‘Jumping out of a Plane’ and ‘The Smart Little Monk’[3].

Wah Wah officially returned to Hong Kong around 2005[8] but is not active in front of the curtain and only occasionally as a concert guest.
