Huangmei Opera, one of the five major Chinese opera genres, originated in Huangmei County, Hubei Province around the tea-picking tune, also known as the Huangmei tune, in the mid- to late-Qing Dynasty, the tea-picking tune and Huangmei, Hubei, the combination of local folk theatre, and singing and recitation, and gradually developed into a new type of opera, which is the early prototype of Huangmei Opera. Later, Huangmei Opera borrowed and absorbed the music, performance and repertoire of Qingyang Cavity and Huizhou Tune, and started to perform ‘this opera’. Later, it was developed in Anqing Province, and after more than a hundred years of development, Huangmei Opera eventually became the main local opera genre in Anhui Province, and as it spread to the neighbouring Jiujiang City of Jiangxi Province, it eventually became a nationally renowned opera genre, and there are also professional or amateur groups performing Huangmei Opera in Hubei, Jiangxi, Fujian, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Hong Kong SAR and Taiwan, which have been widely welcomed. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, Huangmei Opera rapidly developed into an influential theatre in China and became famous overseas, and in 2006, it was selected as one of the first batch of national intangible cultural heritages in China.
