Do you remember ‘Little White Boat’? This was one of the most familiar songs to us in the 60s and 70s. When I was a kid, I used to sit in front of the Rediffusion wooden box in Singapore and listen to it while doing my homework. This little wooden box used to play programmes from 6am to 12 midnight and accompanied us through our childhood. ‘Little White Boat’ has been with us for generations in Singapore. ‘Little White Boat’ is a favourite children's song. ‘Little White Boat’ is a lyrical and beautiful Korean nursery rhyme that depicts the moon and the Milky Way in a serene and enchanting vision of romantic poetry. In addition, there is an essay by Lao She called . . . The song describes the legendary mythological story; the little white boat on the moon in the sky galaxy.

The Korean nursery rhyme ‘Little White Boat’ (originally called ‘Half Moon’, Korean: 반달) was composed in 1924, with original lyrics and music by Keuk-young Yoon (1903-1988). The song ‘Little White Boat’ is composed of two sections (six bars to a section), and has a soft and melodious triple meter. It is a beautiful song for children. The song ‘Little White Boat’ was once misrepresented as a Chinese nursery rhyme, and it was claimed that Yin Kerong was in fact a Chinese ethnic Korean. In fact, many official and unofficial music textbooks in China refer to Yin Kerong as a North Korean composer, and ‘Little White Boat’ was included in the ‘200 Famous Foreign Songs’ published before the Cultural Revolution. ‘(200 Famous Foreign Songs has been reprinted many times since then, and a 50th anniversary edition has been released), so it is clear that China also considers this song to be a foreign one. Moreover, there are still many well-known Korean children's songs written by Yoon Kak-young, but only one of his songs, ‘Little White Boat’, has been circulated in China. According to the information collected, Yoon Hak-young (윤극영) was born in Seoul into a family of scholars and had a naïve character. His grandfather's name was Yoon Jeong-mok, a former governor of Joseon, and his father's name was Yoon Jik-seon. Yoon Kak-young was smart from a young age and could already read the Korean word ‘Cheonjiwon’ at the age of 4. He married early at the age of 16. In 1923, he met Pang Jung Huan (the famous Korean pro-democracy activist who created Korea's Children's Day, which falls on 5 May) in Tokyo. Pang Jung Huan told him that he should not write for himself, but for the children, who were the hope for the future, and that there were no children's songs in Korea at that time; Pang's words inspired Yoon to work hard on his children's songs. In September 1924, his sister's husband passed away, and he saw that she used to look at the half-moon in the sky during the daytime, so he wrote ‘반달’ (half-moon) on this theme, which depicted his sister's loss of her loved one on the one hand, and alluded to the pain of losing her homeland to the Japanese on the other hand. Yoon Hak-young once said in an interview that he wrote the last line of the song with the morning star guiding the way to show that there is always hope.
