Yao Li (姚莉) (3 September 1922 - 19 July 2019), formerly known as Yao Xiuyun (姚秀云), was a native of Shanghai and one of the well-known female singers of the Shanghai Bund period, along with Zhou Xuan (周璇), Bai Hong (白虹), Bai Guang (白光), Gong Qiuxia (龚秋霞), Li Xianglan (李香蘭) and Wu Yingyin (吴鶯音), known as the Seven Great Queen of Songs of the Shanghai Singing World in the 1940s.
At the age of thirteen, she was introduced to the Bai Dai record company by Zhou Xuan and Yan Hua, who recognised her singing talent, and she began her singing career. Her hit song ‘Rose Rose I Love You’ became an international hit, and her other hit ‘Spring Breeze Kisses My Face’ was a popular radio favourite in the 1950s.Yao Li lost her brother in 1967 and quit singing, and from 1969 to 1976, she was invited by the owner of Baidai Records to be a producer, where she produced the works of famous singers such as Pan Xiuqiong, Cui Ping, Jing Ting, Liang Ping, etc.[8] Yao Li also sang for the Shanghai Singing Festival. .
In 2005, Yao Li appeared on stage at a concert by Paula Tsui, which was her last appearance on stage. In 2011, Yao Li participated in the recording of the Chung Brothers' album Singing Together - Songs of Wu Bingjian and sang the classic gospel hymn “Dear Lord”, which was Yao Li's last recorded work during her lifetime. On the evening of 23 March 2013, the ‘Yao Li Legendary Concert’, a tribute to Yao Li, was held at the Ebenezer Hall in Wan Chai.
