Biography. In 1960, she dropped out of Fukuoka Jogakuin High School after two years and entered Takarazuka Music School. While at the school, she applied for and passed an audition for Watanabe Productions,[2] and moved to Tokyo to sign a contract (she dropped out of the school.
After about a year of lessons, she made her debut in 1962 with ‘Bossa Nova de Kiss’ on King Records under the catchphrase ‘Bossa Nova Musume’ and began her career as a singer in earnest.
Her stage name was given by Susumu Watanabe, founder of Watanabe Productions. The name means ‘I want you to be flexible and strong like Azusa Yumi’ .
In July 1963, ‘Hello Baby’ (lyrics by Rokusuke Naga, music by Hachidai Nakamura), released as the song of the month in Yume de Aimasho [2], became a big hit and won the Grand Prize at the 5th Japan Record Awards in December of the same year [1]. It was also her first appearance in the 14th NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen (Red and White Singing Contest), and earned her status as a popular singer. The song was also adopted as the marching song for the opening ceremony of the 36th National High School Baseball Tournament in March 1964. She was also invited to perform the song at the Gakushuin Elementary School Alumni Association held at Chinzan-so in Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo, in May 1964, in front of the Emperor Showa. This was the first Tenran song in the Japanese entertainment industry since the Meiji era [8].
In 1971, she married actor Koji Wada, but they divorced in 1972 .
In 1974, she had her biggest hit in a long time when she sang ‘Futari no sake wo’ (lyrics by Michio Yamagami, music by Masaaki Hirao), which she sang while sitting on the floor. The song won the Broadcast Music Award at the 5th Japan Song Awards and the Popular Award at the 16th Japan Record Awards at the end of the same year, and she also made her eighth appearance in the 25th NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen after a five-year absence, successfully changing her image. Meanwhile, from July 1971 to February 1978, she appeared as the presenter of the TV programme ‘Shinkkosan Irasshai! (hosted by Katsura Sanshi) from July 1971 to February 1978.
