DARSO, RINA & DEWI - NYINTING

Re-posting this AMAZING cassette from Darso and I still find it hard to even describe this one, Sundanese traditional music, pop Sunda mixed with some unbelievable psych-influenced guitar playing. In my 15 years or so of crate digging here I have only once seen this cassette, it really is very, very rare and I'm not even sure if this was even released way back....

ADJIE BANDI - INSTRUMENTALIA

Here's an album from Adjie Bandi. He was born in Blitar in 1947 and he could play many instruments, he studied at at the Academy of Music Yogya which he completed in 1969. He loved classical music and played for a while with the Simphony Orchestra Adidharma Jakarta and then went on to play violin in the group C'Blues.... After that he played for a while in a group called Gypsy with among others Keenan Nasution. Later on his song Damai Tapi Gersang won at the World Popular Songs Festival in Tokyo and in that period he released a few solo albums....

UNION CHINESE ORCHESTRA - BEST HITS OF DANCING MUSIC

There are many kinds of Off-Beat Cha Cha music, from almost pure rock n roll to music more based on traditional Chinese music. This one is more based on Chinese traditional album, a lovely album with a great cover version of the famous Indonesian song Bengawan Solo....

TITIM FATIMAH - PELITA

I posted this album a long, long time ago already, but that was a pretty beaten up copy. I've got great copy now, very, very happy with it, Titim Fatimah is among my absolute favorite artists and her albums are SUPER RARE these days.... Incredible kliningan music. Back in the days, in the 50's and the 60's she and Upit Sarimanah were among the biggest artists in Indonesia. Riots would break out if they appeared somewhere, fan hysteria that was Beatles like in its intensity a decade before The Beatles even existed...

If Sukarno, Indonesia's first president really wanted to entertain and impress foreign guests, he would ask her to come play at the Presidential Palace in Bogor...

KELUARGA KESENIAN DAERAH DJAWA TIMUR STUDIO SURABAJA

Here's a very interesting one, klenengan music from Surabaya in East-Java and it has a gending cover from the song Gendjer Gendjer on it. Some of you probably know the story already but I'll tell it again. In the early 60's two records came out with versions of this song. Lilis Suryani's "Lilis.... Ia Tetap Diatas!!" and Jack Lesmana's album "Mari Bersuka Ria" with Orkes Lenso that had Bing Slamet's version of the song on it. Both these albums were banned under the fascist Suharto dictatorship, just having these albums could land you in jail for a long time, heavy torture very probable.... This was because Gerwani, the female wing of the Indonesian Communist Party, the PKI, used to play that song, Gendjer Gendjer at their meetings....

The song itself has no political message at all, it's about a poor woman eating water spinach (gendjer) and bringing some to the market to sell...

The song's composer, Mohamed Arif, was among the hundreds of thousands murdered when the Suharto regime took over in 1965....

I imagine this record must've been banned too....

GENZO WAKAYAMA, ONO TAKASI AND NIGHT SIX & YOICHI SUZUKI AND HIS LATIN COMPOSERS - PINK MOOD DE LUXE

I honestly think this is one of the best albums I've got my hands on this last year or so, incredibly cool crime-jazz, it's like listening to a Kenyon Hopkins album.... I have not been able to find out who is playing the music, each song is introduced by legendary Japanese voice actor and dj Genzo Wakayama and this album came out in 1966....
