Side A Chinese Piano Works for Solo Piano’ is a collection of 104 piano works for solo piano by 47 Chinese composers from 1913 to 2013, which tells the story of the most characteristic Chinese piano works in each period of history with high frequency of performances and accepted by the public, and comprehensively presents the development of Chinese piano music creation in the past 100 years.
Dance Theatre ‘Fish Beauty’ - Three Selected Songs In 1959, the dance theatre ‘Fish Beauty’ was premiered in Beijing. The dance drama shows the story of the young hunter who rescues Princess Fish Beauty. They meet on the beach and fall in love, and with the help of the ginseng old man and the sea fish, they break all kinds of magic spells of the mountain demon, and finally reap the fruits of true love. The piano version of the music was adapted by composer Du Mingxin and published in 1982.
What we hear below is the ‘Watercress Dance’, from the first act of the dance theatre, which expresses the character of the seabed. On the stage, the water plants girls in long green dresses, through the swinging of arms and the undulation of bodies, express the water plants floating in the sea water. The music matches the development of the plot, using a large number of trills and fast flowing patterns, combined with the writing technique of far-relative tonal counterpoint, making the music rich in colourful variations.
Coral Dance’, from the first act of the dance theatre. Six actresses wearing coral-shaped decorations on their heads and red leotards dance against the backdrop of a bizarre underwater world. In the music, composer Du Mingxin intentionally added repeated trill patterns, showing a delicate and graceful feeling.
Wedding Scene Dance’ is the soundtrack for the grand wedding scene in the second act of the dance theatre. A fast, gorgeous, smooth, pentatonic theme dominates the piece, and the melody changes and repeats in several different keys, expressing the passionate and exuberant ballroom scene.
Side B Composer Sang Tong's (1923-) Seven Pieces on the Theme of Inner Mongolian Folk Songs, also known as Seven Pieces of Eastern Mongolian Folk Songs, is a piano work composed of Mongolian folk songs from the eastern region of Inner Mongolia, consisting of seven pieces: Mourning Song, Friendship, Homesickness, Grassland Love Song, Dance of the Children, Lamentation and Dance Song.
