Hey there Henk! My friend & me will be visiting Indonesia in February & I was wondering if you'd like to meet. No pressure, a chat & a coffee if you have time. I could even bring French-Canadian records from Québec if you're into exchanging! Let me know here : om1623 atta yahoo dottod ca We'll take it from there. (But do it fast : I'm flying on the 4th of Feb!) Btw : your blog is awesome! David from Canada.
well, me and my wife are running a backpacker hotel, close to the train station in Bandung and I'm always there. Place is called The New By Moritz....
And sorry, but I'm not into exchanging or selling, don't know if you come here to hunt records but if you are let me warn you, Indonesia is emptied out of it's records, I ain't lying, your best bet would be Jalan Surabaya in Jakarta but it's pretty much emptied out there too (when it comes to Indonesian music) and expect CRAZY prices, or maybe at warung music in Blok M in Jakarta, CRAZY expensive too, if you're looking for the stuff that EVERYBODY is always looking for, Dara Puspita, AKA, SAS etc., forget it, it's just not there anymore, it's all in Japan, Europe, the US and Canada and if by some crazy chance you might find it, expect to pay anywhere between say a thousand to two thousand dollars per record, ain't kidding.... traditional music (which is all on cassettes), forget it, ain't there anymore, I get most of my stuff through contacts, took me years to build that up but they tell me too, it's just drying up now, rarely get things from second hand stores now and I hunt almost every day and it's a question of being VERY lucky, coming somewhere at the right time 'cause as soon as some stuff comes in it's gone in no time, especially since it's become trendy with local upper class kids to collect records now....
check out Strawberry Rain records by the way. he's from Canada too, BIG collector of Indonesian music, like me he has his contacts but in Jakarta and he told me the same thing, nothing to be found anymore (unless you're looking for really really bad 80's pop music)
Thanks for the infos, Henk! We'll probably pass by the hotel - at least to say hello, I don't know if we will or not be able to sleep at a friend's place in Bandung... But anyway. Too bad it's that impossible to find any good records now - it's the same in Canada! It's would have been a plus, though I'm mainly visiting to eat strange stuff, get good spices, hike a mountain or two, hear live music, motorcycle in the jungle, beaches, etc. Maybe we'll have a question or two about fun stuff to do in the area. Like : do you know if we can rent a place w/ an oven? I like to cook w/ local finds when travelling... Anyway : see you soon! David
Hi Henk I am following from time to time your nice blog and naturally I love the Indonesian culture .By the year 1999 I was in Bandung and …some years later I realised this short movie. Have a nice time In Java or elsewhere …Ayis Jeans Street………………….https://vimeo.com/72332195
thanks! 1999? i don't think you would recognize it now, it's gone down.... a lot!!! new mayor, he;s doing quiet a lot to try and undo the damage that 10 years under the corrupt ultra-right wing "leadership" of dada rosada (who is now in jail for stealing millions of dollars meant for projects for the poorest of the poor) did to this once beautiful city....
