DEDDY DAMHUDI & BAND 4 NADA - KASIH BERSEMI
A few years ago my buddy music ethnologist Andrew N. Weintraub who is a Professor at the University in Pittsburgh and who wrote the excellent books Dangdut Stories , Power Plays: Wayang Golek Puppet Theater of West Java , and loads more asked me if I had Eddy Damhudi's album Kasih Bersemi, saying it was an important album.... I checked and yes, I have it, asked him why this was such an important album and he told me:
"The psychedelic guitar on that record seems to be way ahead of its time. It was recorded in 1967. Of course, Jopie was influenced by Enteng (Tanamal), as well as the Ventures and Shadows. But this pushed the envelope. I interviewed him about the song "Syarifah," and he was talking about some pretty advanced techniques like distortion/overdrive ("speaker pecah"), Vox echo tape unit (aka "echoplex"), "backwards" guitar (playing a solo, playing it back backwards, and then recording the backwards part), and sticking a matchstick in between the three tone settings on his strat to make two additional tone settings."
Recorded it, listened to it and man, this is really a fantastic record! Jopie Item's guitar playing is out of this world on this one and the rest of the band, Band 4 Nada is also excellent!!! A great example of 1960's early psych-pop....
So here it is!
