  1. Went searching your blog after the Padang Moonrise comp, didn't know sumatera mambo, definitely a huge fan. Thanks for this one

  2. I was talking with my buddy Andrew Weintraub, he wrote the liner notes for that comp. Turns out I'm the one who coined that name, Sumatera Mambo, many years ago, I had quite forgotten about that :) Miles Cleret, who made that comp, I met him once here in Bandung, nice guy, he must've paid through the nose for those albums because even then, I think it was around 8 years ago or so, you couldn't find that stuff anymore.... Funny thing is, the same type of music was made at the same time in Kalimantan and Sulawesi and other places in Indonesia but thanks to guys like Oslan Husein and the Gumarang guys it was all quite centered around Padang back then (although most of these artists were living and recording in Jakarta back then).... Just had another look at that comp. Most if not all of the recordings can be found on this blog too :) And then some....

  3. The other funny thing btw... I see he also has songs from band Nada Kentjana on it, that was a Sundanese band from Bandung singing in Sundanese language, nothing to do with Padang music :)

  4. Ah ok, reading more about it, it's a compilation that has music from all over the Archipelago, ok, quite heavily focused on the Padang scene though... Songs from one album that I would love to have on it, Orkes Sendja Meraju...

  5. Wow, Henk, you're so right about this one! It is so cool. Sort of like a cross between Martin Denny & Dinah Washington.
