Track 02 07 10 Duet with Xie Lei

Chang Chi(Zhang Youqin 張友琴), female, a native of Fuzhou, Fujian Province, is a former singer in Taiwan. She changed her job from an entertainer to an insurance agent in her middle age, and in her later years she was engaged in public welfare and charitable volunteering. Her younger sister, Zhang Qin (real name Zhang Aiqin), was also a singer in her early years and later became a presenter, and has been involved in theatre performances in recent years.

In 1964, when Zhang Qi was 17 years old, the police radio station held a ‘Traffic Safety Songs Singing Competition’ and offered high prizes, Zhang Qi signed up to participate in the competition, and won the championship in one fell swoop, and was admitted to the police radio station's ‘Air Opera House’, and the runner-up of which was Zhang Qi's future ‘singing lover’, Xie Lei. The runner-up was Zhang Qi's future ‘singing couple’, Xie Lei.

Zhang Qi and Xie Lei signed a contract with the Police Radio and were required to sing live at the Police Radio every day. The two were invited to participate in the ‘Star Club’ after a visit to Shenzhi by Li Peng-yuan, the producer of the programme, who brought Zhang Qi and Xie Lei to the programme. At first, they were each playing a small role as a back-up act after the big-name artistes had sung. One day, when there was a three-minute gap in the programme, Shenzhi asked Zhang Qi and Xie Lei to sing a song to avoid the programme opening up, so Zhang Qi and Xie Lei sang a song called ‘Counterparts under the Moon’, which was very well received by the audience and became a big hit.

In 1965, Lai Sung Film invited Chang Qi to record the album ‘Lover's Bridge’, the first 12-inch vinyl record in Taiwan (before that, it was 10-inch); the album's hit song ‘Lover's Bridge’, which was adapted from a Yunnan folk song, later became Chang Qi's signature song.

In 1969, Zhang Qi was elected as the ‘First White Flower Oil Charity Queen’ in Hong Kong,[6] and began to perform in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia; the family's finances began to improve, and Zhang Qi drew her younger sister, Zhang Qin, to sing along with her, for example, in a cover of ‘Boat Rocking Song’.
