Legend of the Owl , a 1981 Hong Kong film co-produced by Yuan Heng Pictures and Silver Pictures, directed by David Chiang. Based on Gu Long's novel The Legend of Chu Liuxiang: The Bat, it incorporates elements from Gu Long's novels The Loverly Swordsman and The Heartless Sword, The Peerless Duo, alongside characters and plot elements from Huang Ying's The Legend of Shen Shengyi and The Metamorphosis of the Heavenly Silkworm. It even ventures into crossover territory with references to The Yellow Pages, Bruce Lee, Alien, Star Wars, Jaws, Tarzan, the TV series Mission: Impossible, and the TV series Charlie's Angels. It spares no popular cultural references, ancient or modern, Chinese or foreign, delivering a sweeping subversion and mockery of the Gu Long wuxia films that became prevalent from the late 1970s onwards.
