Great genjring cassette from Kasbullah and his Genjring Kuda Kecil group with Itih S., Lilis Kasiri, Kontrak and Saturi....
Genjring is a form of acrobatics that you only find in certain areas around Cirebon and Majalengka. Only women do this type of acrobatics, it started in the 1940's. In the beginning they only accompanied it with a kind of tambourine but through the years more and more instruments were added. It's very close to tarling music....
Before they start with the acrobatics they do a dance first, called the Rudat dance which is very much tied to the propagation of Islam....
In 1964 an artist from Bayalangu, a village close to Cirebon, called Kasbullah started his own genjring group called Genjring Kuda Kecil (Little Horse Genjring) and his daughter, Lilis Kasiri is also singing on this cassette.... Lilis got married with a man named Karyadi and when Kasbullah became too old he took over the group.... I think the group still exists to this day although I'm not sure who's leading it now....
These acrobatics are pretty amazing and some of these women show amazing strength, like this performer, known as Wonder Woman who is able to lift a motor cycle with her feet:
