刘家昌/Liu Jiachang:English Steven Liu is Giant of Taiwanese film Music. This is one of Thousand.
At first, Liu Jiachang sang Western songs in nightclubs in Taiwan, but it did not go well. It was not until 1968 that he rose to prominence with a song of the same name as the theme song for the Qiong Yao film Moon Over the West Tower. [5] In 1970, the song ‘The Past Can Only Be Recalled’, written for You Ya, was released with great success, and the singer You Ya quickly became popular in the singing industry. [8]

Liu Jiachang used to create best-selling songs for many singers, in addition to You Ya's ‘Past Matters Can Only Be Reflected Back’, there were also Teresa Teng's ‘Alone on the West Tower’, Jenny Tseng's ‘Vow’, Fenghui Fei Fei's ‘There is Truth and Vitality’, Faye Ouyang's ‘Yearning for the Future’, Liu Wenzheng's ‘Promise’, Weng Qianyu's ‘Seagulls’, Jiang Lei's ‘Smoky Rain and Slanting Sun’, Fei Yuqing's ‘Goodnight Song’, ‘Ode to the Republic of China’, Yangfan's ‘Raise the Sail’, Yang Lin's ‘Different’, Shen Yan's ‘A String of Hearts’, etc. His film theme songs of the same name, ‘Plum Blossom’, ‘A Curtain of Dreams’, and ‘Deep in the Courtyard’ are also familiar to the public.

The Japanese record industry also took note of Liu's talent, and in May 1974, Liu signed a contract with Victory Records as a guest composer and singer-songwriter consultant. The then popular Japanese groups ‘Uchiyamadayo & Cool Five’ (with Kiyoshi Maekawa on vocals) and Shinichi Mori recorded Japanese covers of Liu's Mandarin songs, and the Japanese paid Liu as much as 4 million yen per song.Among them, Liu was the first to record a song with the Japanese label, and the first to record a song with the Japanese label. One of the songs, ‘Sea Song’, performed by Tanyo Uchiyama & Cool Five, was featured in the 25th NHK Red and White Singing Contest in 1974. [9] The song ‘My House is There’, written by Liu Jiachang, was also covered by Japanese singer Masashi Sada, with the Japanese version of the song titled ‘Peach Blossom Garden’.

Liu Jiachang was also influential on the younger generation of the music industry. For example, Ye Jiaxiu, a well-known singer-songwriter during the Campus Folk Song period who later became a music producer, regarded Liu Jiachang as the most important mentor in his music career[10]. Well-known singer-songwriter and music producer Chen Sheng also worked as Liu Jiachang's assistant in 1982, and said in an interview that Liu Jiachang was ‘basically an alien, a god in my heart’.

In the 1980s, he founded Ordway Records, which released albums for singers such as Wang Hai Ling, You Ya, and Zhang Li Min.Some of the better-known songs include ‘In the Rain’, the original version of which featured a duet between Wang Hai Ling and Liu Jia Chang.

According to Liu Jiachang's own account, he has composed an estimated 2,000 to 3,000 songs. [5]
