R.C. JAMAR MEDIA - DUKUN PORNO

Here's a lawak tunggal (stand-up comedy) cassette from R.C. Jamar Media. Back in the late 70's and early 80's he was putting out lots of cassettes, lawak tunggal cassettes, sandiwara (stories) cassettes and wayang cassettes and he was very popular. The wayang performers, most of them hated him, he was quite the innovater, putting sound effects in his wayang tapes, modern music pieces and wayang, up to that point, was very much traditional, very adverse towards anything new, but it was the cassette era, specially in the 70's, the new medium, and it revolutionized everything. In former times, where vinyl was the only option, only the better off could afford it. Cassettes, most everybody could afford them... My friend Andrew N. Weintraub has written about this period in his excellent book Power Plays which is about Wayang... It also had a huge effect on wayang, the way is was recorded, the way how it was performed even... One dalang (wayang puppet player) who was hugely inspired by R.C. Jamar Media was Asep Sunandar Sunarya, he started incorporating more humor into his recordings and performances and eventually developed his own style, the bodoran style which was basically totally humorous (but full with messages and very heavy in criticism towards the Suharto regime which got him in trouble quite a few times, he really kept the censors very busy with his wayang cassettes).... R.C. Jamar Media's recordings, funny as they were, also always had a heavy religious side to them, and in the 80's he totally stopped putting out cassettes and became a full time Islamic preacher.... LENGGER KAMPI BANJARWARU - SUWE ORA JAMU

Lengger Kampi was a legendary traditional dancer from Banjarwaru in Central Java. She was one of the big three dancers from that area, the others being Lengger Adminah and Lengger Sopiah (lengger means dancer), and these dances are accompanied by calung music. There were quite a lot of lengger dancers but those three became the most famous... Unfortunately it's, from what I've been reading, a bit of a dying art form. It was always the music of choice at weddings etc. but in modern times people more often choose to have the more modern music forms of campursari and dangdut at their weddings, much like here in West Java where weddings these days have more dangdut then the old traditional music... Here in and around Bandung I have been seeing a lot of renewed interest among youngsters in traditional music, specially wayang and jaipong are pretty popular again these days, and for that I'm grateful.... Took me a moment to realize it but the woman pictured on the cover is actually Lengger Kampi.... This genre, the dances and the music, it all goes pretty deep actually, and I'm reading as much as I can find about at it the moment.... GET IT HERE Enjoy!

Dewi Sartika (4 December 1884 – 11 September 1947) was the leading figure and pioneer for the education for women in Indonesia. She founded the first school for women in Dutch East Indies.
