For many years I had the impression that Central and East Javanese traditional music was all about gending music and that it was all rather static, all music made for the palaces of the sultans. How wrong I was! The more I'm diving into the music from those areas the more I'm finding out how incredible the music coming from there is, how deep it goes and how varried it all is.... Gending music itself goes incredibly deep, with so many styles and variations, I have barely scratched the surface! Currently, I'm really fascinated with all the music coming out of the Banyuwangi area in Central Java, music like kendang kempul, you can find a bunch of cassettes on this blog, or the music featured in this post, gandrung music.... Here's a great Laras Madya cassette from Dalmono and the P.W.S. Group. Laras Madya is a form of Islamic music from Central Java, based on the Serat Wulangreh text written by Pakubuwono IV. The Laras Madya instrumentation is generally done with traditional percussions such as the kendang, the terbang dhana, the terbang gong, and the two-pitches saron, to accompany the Bowo (solo singer), and the Gerong (accompanist singer). TODAY'S KUDA LUMPING TRANCE DANCE SHOW

Great kuda lumping trance dancing show today, right in front of my house. It was WILD, I've been to quite a few of these kind of shows but never one as wild as this one, the power on my phone ran out so I couldn't film when it got really crazy, some of the dancers really went deep in their trance, storming blindly into the crowd with enormous force, "kasurupan pamonyet" is what we call that, every dancer that went too crazy, they needed 8 to 10 men to keep them down, it got so crazy that some village officials put a stop to the show, afraid that people would get seriously hurt, never seen anything like it, and I loved it :) Watch the third video at 3.06 and see what happens, no describing the force of that....
