GUEST STARS OF THE HEE HAW SHOW

Hee Haw was an American television variety show featuring country music and humor with the fictional rural "Kornfield Kounty" as a backdrop. It aired first-run on CBS from 1969 to 1971, in syndication from 1971 to 1993, and on TNN from 1996 to 1997. RFD-TV began airing reruns in 2008, where it currently remains. The show was inspired by Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In, the major difference being that Hee Haw was far less topical, and was centered on country music and rural culture. Hosted by country music artists Buck Owens and Roy Clark for most of its run, the show was equally well known for its voluptuous, scantily clad women in stereotypical farmer's daughter outfits and country-style minidresses (a group that came to be known as the "Hee Haw Honeys"), and its corn pone humor. Hee Haw's appeal, however, was not limited to a rural audience. It was successful in all of the major markets, including New York, Los Angeles, Boston, and Chicago. Other niche programs such as The Lawrence Welk Show (which targeted older audiences) and Soul Train (which targeted black audiences) also rose to prominence in syndication during the era. Like Laugh-In, the show minimized production costs by taping all of the recurring sketches for a season in batches, setting up for the Cornfield one day, the Joke Fence on another day, etc. At the height of its popularity, an entire season's worth of shows would be taped in two separate week-long sessions, then individual shows were assembled from edited sections. Only musical performances were taped with a live audience; a laugh track was added to all other segments. The series was taped for the CBS Television Network at its station affiliate WLAC-TV (now WTVF) in downtown Nashville, and later at Opryland USA in the Donelson area of Nashville.[5] The show was produced by Yongestreet Productions through the mid-1980s; it was later produced by Gaylord Entertainment, which distributed the show in syndication. The show's name was coined by show business talent manager and producer Bernie Brillstein and derives from a common English onomatopoeia used to describe the braying sound that a donkey makes. After 25 seasons, the series initially ended its run in June 1993,[1] where it was soon picked up by TNN for reruns. TNN would eventually order an additional season of first-run episodes, beginning November 23, 1996. The show ultimately ended for good on December 27, 1997.... Here's a two record set with artists that appeared on the Hee Haw show, Buck Owens, Faron Young, Ferlin Husky, George Jones, Wynn Stewart, Sonny James and Minnie Pearl.... STEVEDORE STEVE - I'VE LIVED

For many, many years of his life Canadian Stevedore Steve was doing the Jack Kerouac, traveling all over Canada, the United States and Mexico, riding box-cars, hitch-hiking or just walking, doing odd jobs along the way. When he died, at age 80 he donated his body to science.... The songs on this album explain, he writes, how he lived.... At times you would swear you're listening to Johnny Cash, but not when you hear the one small hit he had way back with the song Lester The Lobster..... GET IT HERE Enjoy!

ROY ACUFF AND HIS SMOKY MOUNTAIN BOYS - SONGS OF THE SMOKY MOUNTAIN

When I think of the Smoky Mountains, I can't help it. I think about Jim Cornette and his Smoky Mountain Wrestling promotion and how great they were, the place where one of the greatest, craziest and most heat causing interviews of all times was given.... Police had to come and get these guys out of the backdoor because folks was in the front waiting to lynch them after that interview. For real :) These days, I don't watch wrestling all that much anymore but I still watch/listen to Cornette all the time :) But anyway.... Here's some ol' country & western music from the Smoky Mountains, Roy Acuff and his Smoky Mountain Boys..... GET IT HERE Enjoy!

DE BOMMELBAND - IN MIJN HART...

Here's an album from Rotterdam band De Bommelband.... Frontman Arjan van Bommel is a good friend of mine and guitar player Marko van der Horst was one of my closest friends, he passed away some years ago and I miss him very much, can't even begin to describe all the adventures I had with him.... They play blues-rock and country songs, all sung in Dutch and they were always fantastic live... Me, Marko and Bommel used to work together in a crazy cafe in Rotterdam called The Rhythm, good ol' times :)
Me and Marko working at Roskilde Festival, Denmark, 1995....

J. ELLIOT & D. ADAMS - AMERICA, LA STORIA DEL FOLKLORE AMERICANO

I bought this album some 30 years ago, loved it then and still loving it now, Ramblin' Jack Elliot, who is still performing and Derroll Adams, who passed away in 2000....

From a Wikipedia page:

According to legend, Adams and Elliott would go in the studio with whatever they had, which may have included whiskey and marijuana, and they recorded whatever they felt like recording on the spur of the moment. This style of recording was probably more prevalent in the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s—the result is that the recording is loose around the edges but preserves some of the spontaneity and vigor of a live performance. It is a performative, rather than a compositional, style.

Some of the songs on this album...well... I've been belting them out when I'm in the shower for years :)

Would love to find more albums from both these guys!!!

Oh, and this is an Italian pressing....

COME TO C.

A while ago I put some music here from The Bommel Band, the band fronted by my good friend Arjan van Bommel.... In that band the guitar is played by another very good friend of mine, Marko van der Horst. Me, Bommel and Marko, we go way back, we used to work together in the legendary Rhythm Cafe in Rotterdam and me and Marko, we worked together in 1995, selling South-American clothing at pop festivals in Germany and Denmark, lots and lots of adventures, loads of fun....

Marko also played guitar for a while in this band, Come To C. from Rotterdam and here's their promo cd from a few years ago and it's pretty good actually.... (Come And See is one of my favorite war movies, but that's a whole other topic...)
