So, the year was 1982, I've lived in squat houses in Rotterdam for about a year by that time and most of the folks I was living with were either overdosing on heroin or going crazy over other stuff and I saw the whole punk scene turn to shit and I thought, you know what, fuck this, and I started living with my parents again, end of 1981, I got a job, spending all my money on weed, books, comics by Moebius, Tardi and Corben and records, discovering great bands like This Heat and Metabolist, Fela Kuti etc., going to great concerts, watching acts like The Birthday Party, Linton Kwesi Johnson, Einsturzende Neubauten, Han Bennink and so much more, life really was pretty incredible back then, not a care in the world really, magic mushrooms every now and then and later on sharing all the fun with my bloodbrothers Johnny, Willem and Dick, really, if I had a time machine I would be going back to that time all the time :) 1982 Is also the year that these guys came out, Dutch reggae band Doe Maar and for quiet a while they were the biggest this, you couldn't go anywhere or you would hear their hit Doris Day and I don't care who you are, if you're Dutch and in your 50's like I am, if you were a punk, a hard-rocker, a disco freak or even a skinhead, you know this song, word for word, and if you say you don't you're lying :) From what I hear (from my brothers and sisters who are all huge fans) they still give concerts every now and then and when they do they can fill up huge venues for a couple of days in a row, which, in Holland, is quiet a feat.... When I was 14, 15 years old I would often listen to Stampij, a radio-show presented by Hanneke Kappen, and she would mostly play Heavy Metal. She was also the singer of this band, White Honey and in 1979 they came out with this excellent album.... GET IT HERE Enjoy!

Got a mail from a group called The Budhi, asking if I could help promote their video. They're from Aceh, Indonesia and they're all about protecting the forests (the last bits are being destroyed at incredible rates right now, specially in West-Papua), so I'm happy to help out and spread their message through my little blog :) Also, for more information about the horrible deforestation going on in Indonesia, the corruption, the people behind all this check out this site: https://thegeckoproject.org/

J I R I S T I V I N - Z V E R O K R U H

This is such a fantastic album, bought this one in the early 80's.... Prague flutist J i ř í S t i v í n made rare inroads into syncretic forms virtually untested elsewhere. His cogent approach to classical, experimental and free jazz music facilitated his exposure to London’s improvised scene, including Scratch Orchestra and Cornelius Cardew. In an era when many Czech and Slovak jazz musicians faced significant obstruction by the Communist regime, Stivín’s cross-border activity may be surprising, but the results were nonetheless spectacular. His Jazz Q quartet recorded a trailblazing session with Radim Hladik’s Blue Effect. Later collaboration with guitarist Rudolf Dašek also gained notoriety on the continent. By mid-1970s, Stivín achieved a remarkable level of synthesis between electric jazz and baroque music. He used his versatility to create a poetic idiom of the highest standard. For many, such shameful heterodoxy would amount to little more than an artistic cul de sac. Yet Stivín’s luxurious arrangements are not only cosmopolitan and multifarious, but often entirely counterintuitive. It is therefore not surprising that in later years Stivín specialized in Vivaldi’s and Telemann’s repertoire. GET IT HERE Enjoy!
