Hi Henk Ive been watching a few jaipong clips to get a better feel for this genre. The performance seems kinda casual with random guys approaching the women, handing them money or some token, getting a colored scarf then doing a few dance moves (sorta martial arts) in front of the women. Is this a typical performance or are their different styles
Yeah, that's a hold over from the old times I guess, when small ketuk tilu groups would travel from cities to cities, village to village, the female singers and dancers also prostitutes, it also happens at dangdut performances... usually you give them money then you can dance a bit with them, often you can hold their hand while dancing.... Rumors that the dancers/singers/prostitution still happens far out in the country side but I've never seen that myself. Also heard that sometimes the girls are so young that it's not allowed to really have intercourse with them but that you can fondle their titties for a small price.... It wouldn't surprise me really, it's well known that there's a price list for most of the bigger artists here, I actually saw that list myself when my wife had a cousin working for a big tv station. Really surprised me, prices ranged from a few thousand dollars for a night to tens of thousands, loads of male artists on that list too. According to that cousin most of the male singers, dancers, tv presenters etc. are gay... check the Itih S./dombret post :) https://madrotter-treasure-hunt.blogspot.com/2021/03/iti-siti-aisyah-pacet-group-air-sebuyung.html This stuff would never happen at a Jugala jaipong performance btw :)
Thanks Henk, Jaipong certainly has a fascinating history. Interesting how the Government of the day initially promoted it but changed their mind when it became too popular & started to include social & political issues. Same the world over. Govt's love talking about democracy & freedom but don't really want you to have too much of it :)
