MADROTTER - 18 SLINGSHOTS RE-RELEASE ON CASSETTE BY GRIMLOC RECORDS
Went to a small event at Grimloc Records in Buah Batu, Bandung a few days ago.... They re-released my 2005 album 18 Slingshots on cassette and I had to sign some cassettes. Great time.... My buddy Ucok aka Morgue Vanguard designed the cover, as he did in 2005. He was also the guy who came up with the album title and who pushed me to release it.... Of course the album has been online and on this blog for ages, free download HERE and you can visit Grimloc Records HERE . They're putting out loads of great stuff, vinyl, cd's, cassettes, t-shirts, books, posters etc. and one thing that I find amazing about them is that they all take their standard salary, the rest of all their profits flow into all sorts of, ehrrr, let's call it "social projects" often to do with the many, many land grabs, always going on in Indonesia, where ordinary folks get kicked off their land, have their houses buldozered etc. with little or no compensation, often with crazy violence by police, army, hired thugs....
The most popular track off this album has always been the Pajagalan track with Morgue Vanguard rapping, even after all these years still very popular in the Indonesian, Malaysian and Singaporean underground and we had plenty of problems over that track back in 2005, Morgue a lot more then me to be honest, he even had to go into hiding for a while with 24 hours protection by folks from within the punk/underground scene. It wasn't just about this track but also because of a track he put out with his old group Homicide called Puritan (Godblessed Fascists) which deals with razia's on bookshops and book burnings in Bandung at the time by very, very violent right wing extremist group, early 2000nds....

Ah ok :) Man, I'm so busy that sometimes stuff like that just goes by me :) Most days this blog thing, 8 to 10 hour days, not that I'm constantly working, while recording I might be reading, I might be watching something, might be playing with either my son or my grandson or just busy in the garden or what ever... Used to go out hunting vinyl and tapes, 4, 5 times a week, all over Bandung but these days, there's almost nothing to find anymore, in any kind of genre, mostly somebody might text me or call me, that they have something for sell, but even that is getting lesser and lesser now, too many local collectors now, the young generation has really gotten into it, so many of the old sellers, they just can't find anything anymore. I'm just grateful that I started collecting when nobody was collecting here, over 20 years ago now... Prices for vinyl here now.... it's just insane... Those One Dee Group records? I saw two of them yesterday somewhere and they were asking 2.4 million rupiah for one, that's about 170, 180 dollars, insane, I probably bought them for 3 to 5 dollars way back.... Just checked your links, started following you on Instagram, great!
Not that smart though :) I got married in Holland in 2002 and sold my whole vinyl collection, I really needed the money, a huge collection, lots of post-punk, experimental, jazz and other stuff, and a huge, huge hip hop collection (still have most of the cd's though), but at least I kept some stuff that I just couldn't get myself to sell, my Fela Kuti collection, my records from This Heat, Talking Heads, D.A.F., James White/Change & The Contortions, Metabolist and other stuff.... I was a home taper musician in the 80's, making music with a drumkit, a 4 track cassette recorder, a mic and one of the first sample keyboards, so I was always buying vinyl for taking samples, I really never stopped buying vinyl. Coming out of the punk movement in the very early 80's I started broadening my musical taste, but back then, in Rotterdam, it was HARD finding records, at least the ones I was searching for, like the fuji stuff from Nigeria, never managed to find it... I'm in a mood to record a bit of Indonesian vinyl today, I don't really care if it's already posted on youtube... Mostly re-recording and re-uploading stuff these days, which is great actually, getting the chance to really listen to a lot of it :)
I hope you don't feel too badly about selling those records back then -- as you say you needed the money, plus sometimes you have to prune the garden to allow room for new growth...
Feeling very sorry about some records.... Tuxedomoon, Psychic TV/Throbbing Gristle, Schoolly D, Chrome (I kept two though) and other stuff, but yeah... that's just how it goes....
