Here's a cassette from Greek bouzouki singer S t a v r o s S e r e t i s, bought this tape when I was staing in Athens for a month back in '88.... Loved it there, lovely city, great food, hanging out at the Plaka, the area around the Parthenon, lovely trips to Mycenae to see the Lion's Gate and the ruins of Agamemnon's old palace, visiting the Epidaurus, the world's largest amphitheatre, and lot's more.... Still have the ticket to the National Museum in Athens:
GET IT HERE Enjoy!

  1. This is very underground Henk. Never heard of this singer before. He says he comes from the island of Syros and grew up in Trouba which used to be the brothel area at the port of Piraeus. He also brags about being smart and everyone admiring him. Anyway, talking about Greek popular music, here is the great bouzouki virtuoso, songwriter and innovator Manolis Hiotis from the 50's and 60's. He introduced the electric bouzouki, introduced cosmopolitan elements, like mambo rhythms etc and wrote some great songs. The singer is his wife Mary
Linda. The 1st song is from a Greek comedy film.

  2. Lovely music!!! I know nothing about bouzouki music, only this cassette, I don't even remember when or where I bought it, in Athens during that one holiday.... The way this Manolis Hiotis plays his instrument, maybe weird to say it but in a way it kind of reminds me of Les Paul, the inventiveness and the dexterity etc. :) The one thing I have always regretted about that trip to Athens.... There were all these antique shops around the Plaka, and in some of those shops they would sell plastic bags full of original photographs, real prints, left by German soldiers after the occupation of Greece, just snap shots, always felt sorry I didn't buy a whole bunch of those, just for their historical significance..... I did buy one of those cheap old Greek warrior helmets that they sold to tourists though :) Might still be around somewhere in Holland :) Anyway, thanks for the information, I always loved this tape, always wondered about it.... I posted a few songs from it on youtube and immediately got a "copyrights claim" message :)
