After graduating from university, in 1951, at the age of 24, she made her debut on Nippon Columbia with ‘Hoshizora’. In the same year, she appeared in the role of a drifter in the New Toho film ‘Map of the Mare’, starring Asami Kuji. In 1953 she married Mariko Ando and had a daughter, but they divorced in 1956.
In 1957, she was chosen to sing the theme song of the same name for the film Joy and Sorrow in the Years of Joy and Sorrow, and the song became a big hit along with the film, making Wakayama instantly well known and cementing her position as a popular singer. From this year onwards, he participated in the NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen four times in a row (see below for details).
