Thank you for this, as well as for all the other Benyamin re/uploads. Much appreciated!
ReplyDeleteBtw, do you happen to know the years of all these releases? I've been trying to compile a chronology of Benyamin's discography but it's very confusing since they didn't have the habit of putting the release year on the covers.
welcome! No, I can't help you there, it's confusing with almost all music from the past here I'm afraid....
ReplyDeleteYeah, that's a big shame. One other thing that bothers me regarding the chronology is how it's always mentioned that he started doing gambang kromong songs because Western music was forbidden during the late Soekarno years. But as far as I can tell, his early recordings date from the late '60s, and they are very much rock'n'roll (e.g. Apollo, Tukang Solder). Based on the recording quality these records seem to predate the gambang kromong stuff he did with Ida Royani. Even if they were perhaps recorded at around the same time, that was the period when Indoneisa was economically and culturally opening up to the West. Indonesian rock music was flourishing. So I'm not really sure what Soekarno and 'ngak ngik ngok' have got to do with his gambang kromong recordings.
ReplyDeleteHe actually started out as a pop singer and a jazz singer, singing in night clubs in the late 60's, the gambang kromong stuff came later when he was more profiling as a pure Batawi artist....
