The Songs of Yao Li - The Missing Snowman

    Yao Li
Yao Li (姚莉) (3 September 1922 - 19 July 2019), formerly known as Yao Xiuyun (姚秀云), a native of Shanghai, was one of the well-known female singers of the Shanghai Bund period, along with Zhou Xuan (周璇), Bai Hong (白虹), Bai Guang (白光), Gong Qiuxia (龚秋霞), Li Xianglan (李香蘭), Wu Yingyin (吴莺音), known as the Seven Greats of Shanghai Singing of the 1940s

From here on, it was behind the firewall.

Yao Li was born in 1921 to a wealthy family in Shanghai. However, her second-generation rich father unfortunately became addicted to gambling and left home without a trace. Both Yao Li and her brother Yao Min loved to sing and had outstanding voices. Yao Li's uncle, who also played the violin, was a musical confidant of the siblings. When he got a job as a musician in a radio station, he brought Yao Li and her brother to sing in the radio station. Once, Yao Li attended a charity performance organised by Radio Huaxin, and when she finished her song, she found her idol Zhou Xuan listening to her on stage, making her excited and nervous. Zhou Xuan looked at Yao Li and found her very interesting, and later had a cordial conversation with her. Zhou Xuan's then-husband, Yan Hua, also took an interest in Yao Li, noticing that her voice was similar to Zhou Xuan's, and that with a little coaching she was bound to be a big hit. Yao Li's admiration for Zhou Xuan led her to love her husband as well, and Yan Hua inspired her to rush to Baidai the next day, and Baidai customised a song for her called "Selling Acacia", which was played and sung in the streets.
