Before there was jaipong there was a genre called Topeng Banjet, mainly played in Karawang, West-Java, and within that genre there was a man called Ali Saban who, in the late 60's, early 70's, started experimenting with new rhythms, wau more aggressive, faster stuff than the usual ketuk tilu and kliningan rhythms.... Gugum Gumbira studied with Ali Saban for a while and the banjet genre became a huge part in the music Gugum was developing, jaipong....
