  4. This is Judo・柔道 song.
It could be a fitting end to the year.
One song has as much background as one singer or one musical scene.
Please do not be offended if quotes from the Wiki are lengthy and many words may be unfamiliar to you.

‘Juu’ (柔) is a single by Hibari Misora, released on 20 November 1964 (Showa 39).

    Overview.
Hibari Misora won the ‘7th Japan Record Award’ in 1965 for the title song. Hibari also participated in the NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen two years in a row with the title song, first in the 15th NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen in 1964 and then in the 16th NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen in 1965, both times as the last performer in the red group (the 16th time was the last performer). However, there was some bashing from the press, saying that it was ‘insane to sing the same song two years in a row’ .

The song became an explosive hit in the following year, 1965, in conjunction with the Tokyo Olympics, which were held in 1964 when the title song was released and judo was adopted as an official sport for the first time. As of 2019, it had sold 1.95 million copies, making it the second biggest single sales hit after 1989's Kawa no Nagare no Yoniwa . It broke the jinx that ‘TV theme songs don't hit with enka’ and became a big hit .

The song was used as the theme song for all three series of the TV drama series ‘Judo’, ‘Judo Isshuji’ and ‘Sequel to Judo’, which were produced by Nihon Denpa Eiga and broadcast by Nippon Television between 1964 and 1965 (in addition to this song, ‘Judo no Otoko’, described below, was used in ‘Sequel to Judo’), which depicted the Kodokan, the head temple of judo. ), and as the name suggests, the song is about ‘judo’.

When Misora Hibari was initially asked to sing this song, she once refused, saying that judo is something men do, but director Kunio Watanabe persuaded her directly to change her mind. In addition, another person was originally planned to compose the song, but Director Watanabe had it changed to Masao Koga at his request.

The lyric ‘Don't think you'll win, if you think you'll lose’ at the beginning of the song is said to be based on the words of a Sugoroku master in the book Tsurezuregusa written by Yoshida Ken'yo: ‘You must not play to win, but to lose’ .

When Hibari sang this song on stage and other occasions, she often sang it dressed as a man.

The song was later re-released several times as a single and on cassette tape with the coupling songs changed.

In the manga YAWARA!, Shigoro Inokuma croons the song.

From 1 May 2014 to 30 April 2015, the song was used as the approach melody at Kawasaki Daishi Station on the Keikyu Daishi Line, the nearest station to Kawasaki Daishi in Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture, where Koga had worshipped before his death. Arranged by Hiroshi Shiotsuka .

Wishing you all a happy new year!
